Scripture tells us to Love God and Love our neighbor as ourselves.
At First Christian, we try to follow these words of wisdom through our support of a vast array of ministries, both local and international. Through our efforts, we feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, support education, advocate for justice, and help support a special program of theological education in our own Southern Conference, as well as much, much more.
First Christian has been recognized as a "Five for Five" church, supporting all five national offerings within the United Church of Christ. In addition, we are partnered with the Alamance County Association for the Blind, and have helped support the local Habitat for Humanity, Blessed Sacrament Food Pantry, and Allied Churches.
Worship is at the heart of our life together at First Christian.
Our worship begins at 10:30 A.M. on Sunday mornings followed by a time of fellowship immediately after, at 11:30 A.M.
Fellowship is in our parlor directly off of the sanctuary following worship service
Our worship services are a wonderful blend of creative & transitional elements with introspective & lively segments.
Throughout the course of the year, our worship life is accented by special services. These include services such as a Christmas Cantata,Hanging of the Greens during Advent,Christmas Eve, Lenten services, Maundy Thursday, and Easter Sunrise Service
We worship in a historic building in the heart of Downtown Burlington. Our sanctuary sparkles with the colors of stained glass windows, hand-crafted in Italy.
Our music is an integral part of our ministry at First Christian.
Under the direction of our Minister of Music, our worship services are anchored by our Choir full of faithful church members.
Our Rodgers Pipe Organ, installed in March, 1993, is our primary instrument for worship. The organ is a combination of pipes and digital electronics voiced to the acoustics of the sanctuary. While the main organ is above the choir loft, an additional antiphonal division is located above the elevator, providing a unique spread of sound for organ literature/choral accompaniment and support for congregational singing. With its many facets of sound, the organ continues its role in the tradition of outstanding sacred music at First Christian UCC.
Throughout the course of the year, our worship is supplemented by various guest musicians and musical groups who brought joy to our worship of God.
Our hymnals are the New Century Hymnal published by the United Church of Christ and The Pilgrim Hymnal published by the Pilgrim Press in 1971.
Continuing opportunities for growth in our Christian fellowship is of prominent importance at First Christian.
Our congregation is gifted with strong, dedicated eachers in our Christian Education ministry.
With the exception of one month during the summer, our adult classes meet at 9:30 A.M., prior to worship.
Be on the lookout for opportunities for children and youth soon!
Late spring or early summer, the Board of Christian Education also sponsors a special Symposium for adults several evenings one week. This program has been well supported and attended by community members beyond our own congregation.
In addition to Christian Education, the Board also supports several opportunities for fellowship throughout the course of the year. Family Game Night, and an Ice Cream Social are just an example of these events.
The Board of Christian Education and the Women’s Fellowship groups are the moving force behind the church's support of the Christmas Cheer Program, a ministry that provides Christmas gifts to local families that otherwise would go without.
Finally, the board also supports a Confirmation Program in order to help prepare youth to affirm their baptism..
